The Captain’s hoist: A landmark’s journey to a new home

September 20, 2024

The Captain's hoist, a proud symbol of the mine's long history, was built in 1913 and has witnessed Malmberget's significant transformations firsthand. Now, 111 years later, the hoist faces its own challenge – a relocation to preserve its place in the mine's cultural heritage.

In the fall of 2024, the Captain’s hoist will be moved to a new location within the industrial area between the old headframes of Uppland and Baron on top of the mountain. The goal of this relocation is to create a clear horizon figure that represents the mine’s heritage and history.

However, the move presents its challenges. The hoist is located above a former mine level that is only 1.3 meters below the surface, and there’s also a shaft with fractures. Throughout 2024, extensive work has been carried out to fill in the mine level and reinforce the shaft to ensure it’s safe to use heavy machinery during the move.

Preparations have been thorough, including drone flights, ground surveys, and analysis of potential moving routes.

The Captain’s hoist is already inside the current industrial area limit, and we can’t wait much longer. The risk of collapse increases over time. The move is scheduled for October 2024.
