Urban transformation in Malmberget: a progress update

December 19, 2023

It's time to reflect on the progress made in the urban transformation of Malmberget. We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has been involved in this journey, whether as residents, employees, infrastructure owners, entrepreneurs, or otherwise.

Of all the properties within the affected area, we have successfully secured agreements for 98%, signifying significant progress in the decommissioning process. Only 57 properties remain to be decommissioned, representing approximately 140 households.

Of the existing residences, 20% still stand. Of these, 7% remain habitable, and some single-family homes are still rented out through LKAB Fastigheter. The remaining 13% have been decommissioned and are now awaiting demolition.

According to our timeline, the last residents are expected to move out during 2025. This is a significant milestone in the community transformation and demonstrates the progress made since the first houses were decommissioned and relocated.

Being part of this process has been both challenging and hopeful. The goal has been to minimise the impact on third parties. The challenge has been to ensure that all infrastructure remains accessible for those who remain and that the decommissioning process is carried out in the correct order while maintaining safety. The realisation that this is possible has grown from the many excellent collaborations that have made it possible for us to reach this point.
