Environmental zones
When a project involving the demolition or moving of buildings has been decided on, LKAB must restore the land to the extent possible.
Gentle transition between mine and city
In Kiruna, the Mine City Parks in Malmberget are known as environmental zones. In both cases, these are park-like green areas which are to act as a soft buffer between the fenced-off industrial area and the remaining settlement.
An environmental zone is an area which is tidied up and then sowed with grass. A park-like area is created here; one which is accessible to the public.
A positive addition
The ambition of the environmental zones is that these should be perceived as a positive addition to the existing environment and that the transition between industrial area and city will be gentle and attractive.
In each stage of the phasing out, as each area changes, the environmental zone will grow. It is thus a flexible area. The lifespan of the environmental zone is determined by LKAB’s need of land for mining. The details of the environmental zones are regulated in implementation agreements concluded between Gällivare municipality and LKAB.
